PROJECT NOTES:

IN NEXT MAN COUNTRY has been played in festivals, schools, churches, and even to a packed 'video club' in the city of Danané where much of it was filmed. It first premiered before a live audience in 1996 at "Gate One", a monthly event hosted by University Chapel at Regent College. In 2002, it screened at Vancouver's Pacific Theatre as part of the Imago's Manifest Arts Festival line-up.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1995, two university students and a young filmmaker accompanied David Waines, a Canadian-born missionary/aid-worker, to La Côte D’Ivoire, West Africa, to evaluate the needs of some 300,000 Liberian refugees. For 28 days, they traveled the country, administering health workshops while capturing rare testimonies from the survivors of Liberia’s ongoing civil war. Little did they know that in the midst of experiencing a cultural adventure, they were documenting a pivotal turning point that would bring to power Liberia’s most cunning and ruthless dictator – warlord Charles Taylor – and mark the beginning of the tragic destabilization of an entire West African region.

Digitally remastered, IN NEXT MAN COUNTRY concludes in 2003 with dramatic footage of Liberians celebrating Taylor’s ouster, thus ending 14 years of brutal conflict and ushering in a new era of hope and promise.
