PROJECT NOTES:

Tribe Of Joseph was first penned as a longform novel in 1989 when Cleetche was only 17. It was adapted to screenplay format in 1993 in a Hollywood youth hostel. In 1995, it won a national competition with the Praxis Centre for Screenwriters. With a volunteer cast and crew of over 150 people and a self-raised budget of $45,000, Cleetche produced and directed a 10-minute PROMOTIONAL TRAILER for the film in 2006 and screened it to industry professionals at Vancouver's Hollywood Theatre the following year. Telefilm Canada invested in the screenplay’s development in 1998. In 2001, with their continued support, Cleetche directed the feature-film on a budget of $1.5 million. Tribe of Joseph was broadcast nationwide between 2002-2007 by The Movie Network, Movie Central and Showcase.

SYNOPSIS:

Twelve-year old Jonathon Skinner runs away from home with his church pastor, the charismatic Jacob Cullens, who after being fired for his outspoken views on society and suffering yet another miscarriage with his wife, envisions a wilderness Utopia deep in the mountains of British Columbia. Five years later, Jonathon is one of five abducted boys wearing animal skins and hunting with bow and arrow who are being groomed by Jacob – and mothered by his wife, Ranessa – to follow the Lord as ‘reborn’ leaders of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. When a hunter from the outside world stumbles upon their hidden existence, it triggers a series of events causing Jonathon (now Joseph) to seek out the truth and finally challenge the unquestionable Jacob... who’s messianic zeal has run to madness!
